Mostly it’s “Most Probably”…
Choose the correct sentence from the following sentences:
1) Mostly I will go for a movie today.
2) Most probably I will go for a movie today.
I know I know…this looks like a question from one of the competitive exams (or I would say, CAT…well, it just doesn’t have four options).
Anyways, for the question above, I think most of you can come to the correct answer. Then why is it that only while reading we can understand the difference between “mostly” and “most probably”…and not while speaking!
I’ve been noticing people making this simple but common mistake in their day-today speaking. I would be wrong in saying that it’s not a regional effect. Actually it is. No offences to be meant, but I’ve seen the people from Maharashtra and the southern states making this error more often. People have got such strong notions of this wrong usage that they use it as if they are absolutely correct and never try to look into this blunder. Maybe they never realize it!
And I tell you, it’s infectious. Like one can fall prey to a vice, similarly one can pick up this misusage easily. So I just thought of bringing it into light.
Disclaimer: For the people who have not yet got an answer to the above question, resort to your mother-tongues.

Most probably i think u r right!:)
Queerly enough, I don't think I've heard anyone making this grammatical error before. Hmmm to be honest -- and I'll be swerving this topic in another direction -- I think what we should really be bothered about is people like me, who don't know their own Hindi well. THAT is our Maatribhasha (at the risk of sounding dramatic), and not some link-language. I mean, yes, I realise the importance of knowing one's English well in this world but what is shameful is not knowing what most words in a Hindi Newspaper mean, and no matter how much Sanskrit related it sounds, I don't think anyone of us can go through the first page of our Holy Books in
Hindi without a dictionary. Have you ever sat amongst conversing Buzurgs and felt left out? Even simple Government forms and not necessarily police terminology, is too hard for us to manage on our own. Also, if people can do origin breakdowns, like Latin for GRE preps, why not a Sanskrit breakdown!
this time, you made your blog entry sooner than expected! :D
@unethical...
well, it's a great idea and we all should cover that extra mile in order to know at least our mother toungues.
and i think i know my mother tongue quite well..so much so that i can read a Hindi newspaper and can make most of the sense from what a Hindi newsreader has to say! :)
CAT fever catching up :p... so how a u??? i wanna know wats the driving force behind this post ...
@Jo

I completely agree with unethical! It is a must to know one's mothertongue very well in speech and script...afterall if we can read an english newspaper and understand it completely...we should be able to do the same with a hindi newspaper..and make complete sense of it!!:D
